Harriet was the fifth child of Sir John EVANS 1823 - 1908 and Harriet Ann DICKINSON 1826 - 1858.
Half-sister of Dame Joan EVANS 1893 - 1977
Her mother died on 01 Jan 1858, ten days later after her birth from an infection. Frances PHELPS 1826 - 1890 became her stepmother.
In 1880 Fanny PHELPS wrote to Arthur EVANS 1851 - 1941, Harriet’s older brother, - “He (Charles) seemed a most unlikely person for her to fall in love with, but there is no doubt of the fact that she has done it! ….. I am only sorry Harriet is wasted on a rich man, for she would have made such a good poor man’s wife.”
Charles James LONGMAN was the grandson of Thomas Longman of Paternoster Row, the well-known book publishers. The Dickinsons and Evans families had a long friendship and association with the Longmans. Paper production and books being natural partners.
The family spent their time shared between Nash Mills at Apsley, and London.
