Anna Maria Weight’s Bible
For very many years I have had in my possession a bible, that because of its fragile state, has been hidden safely away in a box.
It is a King James version of Old and New Testaments with the Apocrypha. It was published in 1783 by CAMBRIDGE, printed by John Archdeacon. I have always just referred to it as ‘The Vizard Bible’ as it had records of Vizards written on its end pages. The original owner however was Anna Maria WEIGHT.
In the front of the bible (the son of Anna Maria) Edward Vizard has written -
‘Edwd Vizard
1830
This Bible was my mother’s
& has her name, before she was
married, Anna Maria Weight
1792, written by herself. E.V.
Febry 1874’
This means Anna Maria was nine years old when she put her name to this bible in 1792. It is a confident tutored hand for a nine-year-old of this time. It would have been written with a (what we’d call now) dipping pen.
At present there is no clue to the background of Anna Maria’s family. Her parents, according to scanty records, appear to have come from Hampshire but were living in Cam, near Dursley by the time their first child arrived in 1782.
Anna Maria had two brothers (one died at birth) and a sister -
Edward WEIGHT 1782 - 1857
Daniel WEIGHT 1784 - 1784
Mary Elizabeth Hawkins WEIGHT 1798 - 1864
The ownership of the bible obviously went to son Edward VIZARD after his mother died. He was twenty at the time.
It was then passed on to his youngest child, Charlotte Marian VIZARD 1859 - 1940 who married Arthur John HUBBARD 1856 - 1935.
The bible eventually passed to the care of Frances Ann HUBBARD 1899 - 1986, daughter of Charlotte Marian who in turn handed it to me, Judith
Frances HUBBARD b. 1949, niece of Frances Ann.
The names at the back of the bible have been written in long after Anna Maria’s death, being a list of the children of Edward VIZARD and Ann FOLEY, thus grandchildren of Anna Maria and the generation of my grandmother.
