General Labourer
The umbrella description ‘General labourer’ probably doesn’t do justice in today’s parlance. In remote places and on most islands, even a large island like the Isle of Wight, people were used to a mixed economy workwise. Depending on the weather or what the sea was doing; the season and what other people were doing, having a someone who could get on with things, would always be needed. Fishing at one time, to help build houses or boats another, together with general maintenance; to be able to do a multitude of skills was/is a person of value.
I’m sure William would have been a true islander, able to turn his hand to anything needing doing.
1891 Census
The census of 1891 shows William as head of his household, living at 100 Newcomen Road, Brading, near Sandown, IOW.
James Buckett, his father, is living with them.
William’s occupation is Fisherman.
