Third son, fifth child of Arthur John HUBBARD and Charlotte Marian VIZARD

Born 20th January 1902 - 69 Barrowgate Road, Chiswick, London

Baptised privately 7 Feb. 1902, public church reception 8 March 1902. Sponsors were Herbert VIZARD, Charles E. WILKINSON and Mrs E. J. GALLOP.

Died 8th February 1946 - Ashby, Scunthorpe, Lincs. Buried Bottesford, near. Scunthorpe, Lincs.

The service was taken by his brother, The Rev. George Edward HUBBARD.

Known affectionately as Ben, he had Downs Syndrome.

I think Ben was always loved - but that my grandparents, his parents, found him very difficult to cope with, especially when they were getting older.

In those days there was something of a stigma attached and Down’s people were often ‘put away’ – often in huge institutions, which were often less than understanding of their inmates. My grandparents obviously didn’t want him to suffer a life in an institution and they placed him with a friend in Lincolnshire who was a clergy widow.

By all accounts he was a lovable character.

Ben looked just like many Downs people and was short. He came with someone to St.Albans and our Vicarage around 1944?? He amused me a great deal, as he turned the nursery table on its side and slid all our teddy bears, golliwogs etc. down it, with hoots of laughter. I thought this was a marvellous way of playing and very novel!

But that is all I can remember.

In September 1944 father took a living at Barton upon Humber. Arthur was living in Scunthorpe, a mere 13 miles away. (A bit nearer than south India.)

Did father choose to live near his brother?

I know Ben was tormented by father as a child, but father adored him in later years.
