John Foley was born in Belbroughton, Worcestershire, 19 November 1805. He was educated at Wadham College, Oxford, BA, 1825, MA, 1830. He was a fellow of Wadham College, 1826-46. He was ordained deacon, 1829, and priest, 1830. He was curate of Pershore, Worcestershire, 1846, and vicar of Wadhurst, Sussex, 1847-88. He married Caroline Elizabeth Windham, 1846. He died in 1888.

The collection mainly comprises a Liber Niger of Oxford University, correspondence and certificates.
