S.P.G. Nazareth S. India
30th November 1943
To the Rev. Canon W.F. France
S.P.G. London.
My dear Canon France,
Thank you very much indeed for your kind letter of the 9th June received shortly after I had sent off my September Report to headquarters. I am hoping to return early in the new year and am now seeing about my passage - to say nothing, about such additional matters as passport renewal, passport special endorsement, exit permit and vaccination certificate, which is taking up a lot of my time.
GEH assembles his model of Oyangudi Church, on his 50th birthday, 31st July 1947 in the stable at Littledean Rectory.
If possible, I hope to bring, with me a scale model of one of my Tinnevelly churches. Though rather big, it takes to pieces readily and can be packed into small compass. It could be used at exhibitions and perhaps when I am on deputation. It illustrates the use of Hindu 'motifs' in a Christian building (indigenisation).
I am leaving most of my stuff behind, furniture and books. A second tour is clearly indicated but I sincerely hope I may return as a married man. As soon as possible after my return to England I should like to consult an ear specialist and get my deafness corrected. No doubt the S.P.G. doctor can advise about this matter.
Another small matter. I now have no place in England that I can call 'home.' Since I have been out here my mother has died and my old home near Gloucester is no more. S.P.G. may be able to suggest something possibly. True, I have a brother at St. Albans with whom I am on excellent terms, but unfortunately, he is vicar of an aggressively evangelical church there and I should not care to spend all my furlough with him for that reason. Part of my time I hope to spend in my old parish in Gloucester, but there will be several months when I shall want a 'home' in or near London.
Messrs. Thos. Cook and Sons, Ltd (Bombay) are trying to get me a passage home from Bombay during January - whether by the Cape or by the Mediterranean route I cannot say. All going well hope to be back home in March 1944.
Yours very sincerely,
