6) MAJOR ‘DOC’ ROPER
The extraordinary life of a Dreamer, Archaeologist and Soldier. By Judith Frances Hubbard.
Arthur Cecil Roper or ‘Doc’ as he was known was married to Frances Ann Hubbard. Born in Tasmania, living freely and barefooted in the bush, he sailed to England unaccompanied at the age of nine, to be educated. A sportsman, rather than academic, he got through the rigours of English education and enlisted for the army for WW1. At the end of WW2 he was chosen to be one of the first to help record Hitler’s bunker in Berlin.
A passionate archaeologist and observer of life, I was fortunate to have known him.
