The de BRISSAC lip salve box from the late 1790s
Held or positioned at a certain angle to light, the shadow of the box gives a credible profile of Louis XVI.
The inscription on the holder reads -
This Lipsalve Box dates back to the days following the execution of Louis XVI when it was unlawful to possess any sort of portrait of the Guillotined King; it probably belonged to FRANCES daughter of PETER ABRAHAM DE BRISSAC who married Capt. THOMAS DICKINSON R.N. 30. June 1781. (Hallmarks)
